Targeted financing and payment timing
Maybank launched SME Perkasa in Malaysia, committing RM1 billion in financing approvals over 12 months. Eligible existing SME customers can obtain up to RM1 million, with six months' principal-payment deferral. The bank offers disbursement within 48 hours after full document execution, using transaction and relationship data for credit assessment.
Community financial services chief executive Syed Ahmad Taufik Albar highlighted rising costs, cash-flow pressures and the importance of financing speed alongside advisory support. Maybank identified ten priority sectors: Bernama
- Logistics, courier services and wholesale distribution.
- Construction, furniture, fabricated metals and industrial goods.
- Food supply chains, agriculture, petrol station dealers and machinery importers.

The wider small-business economy
Malaysia's micro, small and medium enterprises generated RM652.4 billion in value added in 2024, equivalent to 39.5% of national GDP. Their output grew 5.8%, compared with 5.1% for the overall economy. Services and manufacturing together contributed 84.7% of MSME GDP. The Department of Statistics Malaysia released these figures on Jul 31, 2025, covering the broader enterprise population rather than one bank's borrowers. DOSM's 2024 MSME statistics
MSME exports reached RM196.8 billion, up 31.3%, and represented 14.3% of total exports in 2024. Employment increased 3.1% to 8.10 million people, or 48.7% of national employment. Services employed 5.29 million people, while manufacturing accounted for 1.31 million. Labour productivity, measured as value added per person employed, rose 2.6% to RM80,507. The July release revised earlier GDP and productivity estimates for 2022 and 2023 using updated company reports, census information and agency data.

Enterprise classification and advisory capacity
Malaysia's SME definition took effect on Jan 1, 2014, using annual sales turnover or full-time employment. Manufacturing businesses fall within thresholds of RM50 million turnover or 200 full-time workers; services and other sectors have thresholds of RM20 million or 75 workers. These national classifications describe enterprise size. They are separate from the particular customer and credit conditions attached to Maybank's financing initiative. Bank Negara Malaysia's SME framework
Bank Negara Malaysia also began its Train-the-Trainers programme in 2016 to strengthen financial institutions' SME advisory capabilities. The collaboration involved bankers' associations led by the Association of Banks in Malaysia, SME Corporation Malaysia, Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia and Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit. Its stated purpose was to address information gaps identified in an SME financing workshop and improve awareness of available government initiatives and services.
